Simple overview of the DVD authoring process ( Work Flow )

Production WorkFlow

Capturing
Capturing using state of the art DVD authoring software is basically the method of getting the video footage from DV/ MiniDV, Dvcam or other media into a digital format.

Editing
This is a two stage process: Typically selecting footage, reordering, shortening scenes, adding transitions between scenes, extra sound, titles, and so on. DVD authoring software usually only has basic editing functions - for more advanced work we use specialist video editing software.

Creating menus within the DVD authoring process
A key part of the DVD authoring process that links key elements is the menu creation added to background images, on which buttons and interactivity is overlayed.
 

Adding other content
During the DVD authoring process, so other content can be added such as presentations, biogs of speakers for conference dvds and so on.

Exporting
The export part involves rendering the video with all its transitions and scene changes, converting it to DVD format and combining it with the additional DVD specific files.
 

Burning
The data is then sent to the DVD burner to be written to the DVD. This can be time consuming, depending on the speed of your system and efficiency of the software.
 

CD Vs DVD/BluRay authoring
Authoring of a CD is generally a much faster and cost effective authoring process. DVD authoring is normally a far more complicated and time consuming authoring process. There are generally far more audio and video elements that need to be linked, often with the complication of different audio tracks per language. DVD authoring has certainly become more cost effective over recent years, although it is still considered an authoring process that requires a level of “Black art” to deliver that truly professional production
